TERRA TENEBROSA - THE PURGING 

 

 

Breach, was undoubtedly one of the most important bands of the 90s, that had a huge influence on what we now call post metal or hardcore. 

 

When Terra Tenebrosa released their debut album The Tunnels, probably few of us expected that this new band that is essentially covered by a veil of mystery and consisting of two former members of Breach, would choose to pursue an even more difficult and different musical path but the end result left us practically speechless.... Meanwhile they just released their 3rd studio album "The Reverses" and still gain massive positive feedback from all around the scene.

 

This is the limited double LP version of their previous and second album "The Purging" where the band continued to surprise us in the same way.

 

It's title in it's simplicity reflects in the most accurate way the content, with its complex and chaotic music, which blends together atmospheric black metal, post hardcore and industrial mostly on the drums and percussion. The slowly fading in, fuzzy riff of the opening track "The Redeeming Teratoma", begins another mystical and obscure journey that lasts for approximately 48 minutes, offering to us unique songs like "The Compression Chamber", with its heavy and repetitive riffs and rhythm. Tempos, twisted harmonies and a variety of deranged vocals from blood-chilling whispers to high pitched screams alternate constantly throughout the album, ranging from the fast riffs and sick vocals on one of the album's stand out tracks "Black Pearl in a Crystalline Shell", that also features a short guitar lead in the middle to the industrial-like instrumental "The Nucleus Turbine". 

 

Terra Tenebrosa is definitely evolving into one of the greatest and most unconventional bands of our time and they have released a monumental and yet at the same time terrifying album, which requires the listener's utmost attention and above all endurance.
