With Arktika, Pelican cements their position atop the post-metal throne by delivering a live album that doesn't just slavishly recreate standards from the band's expansive discography, but transforms the songs into something altogether sludgier, grittier and reminiscent of the bubbling tar pits of the Russian tundra, from whence both came. Recorded in St Petersburg in July 2013, Arktika is Pelican's first stand alone live album, an invaluable document of recent addition guitarist Dallas Thomas and the renewed vigor that he draws from the band. This performance was the last on Pelican's run through Europe in the summer of 2013. Of all the shows recorded the Arktika performance was chosen specifically for its intensity. On it the band distill the tensions of global politics into a shared experience that unifies and transcends the differences, both historical and painfully current, between the USA and Russia, serving as a memento to more peaceful directions. Arktika contains tracks from across Pelican's discography, coating them all with a layer of distortion and darkness unheard on the studio versions. Stretching from their first single through to highlights from last years Forever Becoming, released on Southern Lord Records. This release is Pelican's first self release since their afore mentioned debut and serves as an overview of all they've achieved as they begin work on their next full length. The band will support this release with select festival appearances throughout 2014 including South West Terror Fest and Southern Darkness.
