The whole black metal meets post-rock/shoegaze element that has infiltrated a certain sect of the black metal underground has become a widely known movement amongst several bands (i.e. ALCEST and AMESOEURS are usually the first that come to mind). But before people started to really take note of this movement within the underground black metal scene and before it really took off, the UKs CAINA has been tampering with such influences since the bands inception as a primitive raw one-man black metal band. Began solely by Andrew Curtis Brignell while still in his teens, the young British musician already had this unique vision manifested by combining the likes of raw primitive black metal and indie-rock/shoegaze/4AD influences, combining and mixing such influences before it became this trend where countless dime-adozen bands today attempt to incorporate and mix such genres in their own typically executed music. CAINA was already ahead of its time nonetheless, and already seen as a unique vision by many critics and journalists would compare CAINA as a mix between BURZUM, MOGWAI, and THE RED HOUSE PAINTERS, respectively. Almost like if the 4AD, Mute, or Matador labels would release a black metal album, usually anything by CAINA would be it. Along with many splits and EPs at CAINAs disposal, Hands That Pluck is the fourth album in the CAINA legacy, following the two critically acclaimed albums Mourner and Temporary Antennae. Culminating in pretty much everything CAINA has amassed in its musical career, Hands That Pluck is the most ambitious CAINA album to date. One that is more epic, strange, and unique than anything CAINA has released before. Hands That Pluck, while being the most different, progressive, and idiosyncratic CAINA album to date, is also the most aggressive and visceral CAINA album to date likewise. This harnessed by the three other key vocal appearances on Hands That Pluck, namely vocalists Lord Imperial from U.S. cult black metal band KRIEG, Rennie Resmini who is the vocalist of cult U.S. hardcore band STARKWEATHER, and Chris Ross of BLOOD REVOLT/REVENGE/AXIS OF ADVANCE fame, all playing their role in helping make Hands That Pluck one of the triumphs in the CAINA repertoire. Also important to note that Hands That Pluck will also come with a bonus CD, an EP entitled Old Songs, New Chords which re-interprets four CAINA classics (along with a NICO cover) vs. their re-mastered original versions.
