Released in 1993, MASTER third proper full-length caught a band and the scene it belonged to in a state of transition. By then, although it didn't know it, death-metal had already started its slow but sure spiral downwards under the combined weight of trendy acts and now self-doubting leaders. In the middle of this, despite two very successful albums ('Master' and 'On the Seventh Day', both already reissued by DOOMENTIA), the relationship between MASTER and its label NUCLEAR BLAST had begun to turn sour. But instead of diminishing its impact, it only magnified it. As a result, some say 'Collection of Souls' is, by far, their most punkish recording so far and a strike back at the then sedated and over-triggered sound that was already the norm back then. At the time, Paul Speckmann had decided to briefly relocate to Arizona where he gathered a whole line-up, including guitarists Jeff Kobie and Brian Brady plus drummer Steve Bailey. But after only one European tour, the latter had to be replaced by 'Seventh Day' alumini and ABOMINATION member Aaron Nickeas and his influence can be truly heard on this recording that took place at Solid Sound studio in Hoffman Estates, Illinois in November 1993, where the first album MASTER album (the 1989 version) had also been recorded. Boosted by the surprising inclusion of 'Jailbreak', a THIN LIZZY cover (one of Paul's favourite band, to this day), MASTER never before or since did an album like 'Collection of Souls' and it twenty-one years after its release, it still stands tall and proud among its now wealthy discography. Available for the first time since 1993 on LP format, remixed and re-mastered from the original reels and with an extra bonus track ('Inner Selfless Pride') appearing here for the first time, courtesy of DOOMENTIA of course!
